The Quincunx and it’s Aspects to The Ascendent

In my last article on Aspects to the Ascendent, I forgot the quincunx. That is surprising because it is one of my favorite aspects. The quincunx is 150 degrees. Simply put, it is an opposition plus one sign. For example Aries is opposed to Libra but quincunx to Virgo and Scorpio. The quincunx is strange  because it is not an easy aspects such as the trine or sextile. The easy aspects show our gifts. It is not a hard aspect like the square or opposition. The hard aspects show our struggles. It is a hybrid.

The quincunx  is akin to the horse and the donkey birthing the mule. The mule is his own creature. The quincunx is it’s own entity, as well. The main phrase to remember with quincunx is the  “struggle  to “blend”.

The ASC is one’s face to the world. A planet that is quincunx to the ASC will PROPEL the native to incorporate that planet into his daily life.  If one got a great new pair of sunglasses but the sunglasses did not look good with one’s hair style. One could change one’s hair style and look fab in the sunglasses. That is the nature of the quincunx. One must blend, blend, blend until one gets a fabulous new whole. Let me give some examples.

The Sun is one’s ego. The ASC is one’s outer face to the world. With the quincunx, these two parts do not go together but they can be blended. Once, that is done, the person has a rare and unique personal expression.If the Sun is quincunx the ASC, the native may not know quite what to do with his ego. He may hold back. He may be too bold. He may try out different forms of himself before he finds the one that fits. Lets say that  a man has an Aries ASC and a Scorpio Sun. The Aries ASC is bold. It is a go getter. It will not take no for an answer.It will fight if you step on his toe. It will fight if you step on the toe of his friend.

The Scorpio Sun is quite different. It is smoldering. It  pulls back and watches before he acts. It scopes out the scene like Al Pacino in the Godfather, complete with oh so sexy  shades. Also, with the quincunx, one leg is masculine and one leg is feminine. In this case, the Aries ASC is masculine and the Scorpio Sun is feminine. The workings of masculine and feminine planets are quite different, too. This can be compared to the Yin and the Yang in Oriental philosophy.All in all, we have one fruit on one end and another on the other end.

Staying with our example of the Aries ASC and the Scorpio Sun, the native will have a strange kind of pull between being direct and “in your face” and holding back and keeping his cards close to his vest. He will have to blend  Al Pacino with  Roseanne Barr. Do you like that analogy? I think it shows that there is quite a battle within  the quincunx native but it can be done. Al Pacino and Roseanne Barr combined would be kind of cute 😀

The Moon is one’s heart. With the Moon quincunx the ASC, one would struggle to show one’s heart to the world. Again, we have quincunx signs, which battle each other. I will give an example. Our native will have a Cancer Moon. Her ASC will be Saggi. Saggi loves adventure. Saggi will open her mouth and insert her foot. She is the friendliest ASC and she is the one most prone to follow her adventure compass without thought to the consequences. The Cancer Moon, on the other hand, is a deep feeler and a homebody. She loves to cook. She likes to build a nest in her home for her close circle of family and friends. She is a protective mother hen against the big bad world. She is known to chase off the outsiders, beak pecking. The Cancer Moon can be cliquish with those she loves. She is not one to travel the world and make friends with diverse people around the globe. Her perfect night is a cup of tea and a wonderful snuggle on the sofa. Hence, you can see how the quincunx propels the native to combine disparate parts.

Lets look at Mercury quincunx the ASC. Our native will have a Gemini Mercury and a Scorpio ASC. The Scorpio ASC is not effusive. He is not particularly friendly. He warms up slowly, after assessing the surroundings. He does not trust easily. The Gemini Mercury is very social and very chatty. The Gemini Mercury will be your best friend within five minutes. Hence, you can see how this native will have to move to the middle with these very different signs. Mercury quincunx the ASC, as an aspect, irrespective of sign, would be a struggle to communicate. The signs just exacerbate this. I hope this is clear.

Let’s Look at Venus quincunx the ASC. This native will struggle to show love. She may hold back. She may bound forward too much. She has to learn the balance. With signs, we have quincunx signs, of course. I will give an example. If the native has a Gemini Venus and a Capricorn ASC, she will be a natural flirt with a serious exterior. These two parts do not really go together. Hence, we see the struggle of the quincunx, once again.

Let’s look at Mars. Mars is the planet of goals and passions. If one has a strong Mars, one will go after what one wants in a direct way. If one has a weak Mars, one will hem and haw and maybe veer off the side of the road for an excursion.  Mats quincunx the ASC is a person who cannot go after her goals in an easy way. She struggles to bring them to manifestation. She struggles to make them a reality. With signs, again, we have quincunx signs. Hence, if the native has a Pisces Mars and a Leo ASC, one would struggle between a dreamy Mars who gets lost in fantasy and an ASC who wants to take center stage. We may have a person who looks good on your arm but cannot set a goal worth a darn.(This is exaggerated for purposes of discussion :p )
