Aspects To The Ascendent

big red hat girlLuke, a wonderful member of my website, asked me a question. He wanted to know how aspects to the ASC work. I will try to answer that.

The ASC is one’s walk through the world. If you come to my door, I would see your ASC. You may be dressed fancily or plainly. Your hair may be combed in place. Your hair may be messy. You may look as if you own the world. You may hide your eyes and look down at your feet. After I invite you in, you may speak in a confident way or you may stammer. You may get right to your point or exchange pleasantries. All these would show me your ASC. There are many combinations between planets and aspects that make up you: the you I would see if you came to my door. Let’s see if we can break it down.

I have an article on planets that conjunct the ASC. I will give a brief review here. If the Sun conjuncts the ASC, the native has a burst of natural self confidence. If the Moon conjuncts the ASC, the native will be blessed with good looks. He may have a baby face. He will, also, tend to wear his heart on his sleeve. If Venus conjuncts the ASC, the native will be beautiful. He will be charming and gracious, too. Mars conjunct the ASC would not take flak from others. He would be assertive. If you stepped on his toe, you would know. If Mercury conjuncts the ASC, the native would be a good communicator. If Jupiter conjuncts the ASC, the native will be popular. He will make others feel good just to be around him. He will be upbeat. He may have weight issues, too. If Saturn conjuncts the ASC, the native may look severe. He may have a beaked nose and/or prominent cheekbones. He may have tooth or bone problems, too. If Uranus conjuncts the ASC, the person will have a unique look about him. He may have spiked hair, piercings or just a general sense that he is a rebel from societal standards. If  a person has Neptune conjunct the ASC, he will be beautiful in a dreamy and gentle way. His eyes may look like sea pools. He may have a lack of a solid identity, which can make for a scary feeling of not being solid enough. If Pluto conjuncts the ASC, the person would be a natural leader. One does not mess with these people as they have a natural authority a la the alpha male( applied to both sexes) Chiron conjunct the ASC is the worst of all. It is severe bullying in every case I have seen. The more exact, the worse the bullying.

That is an overview of each planet conjunct the ASC. I used the conjunction for purposes of illustration and because the conjunction is the strongest of all aspects. Let’s widen our scope to trines and sextiles. A sextile is just a buried trine. It is buried slightly. A trine is a free and easy gift. It comes so naturally to you that you take it for granted. However, it is not natural for others and people will admire you for your trines.  Sun trine the ASC would make for an easy flow of ego into every day life. To put it simply, the person would shine with self confidence. Moon trine  the ASC would have an easy time showing his heart to others. Venus trine the ASC confers beauty and grace. Mars trines the ASC makes for a goal oriented person who can get things done. Mercury trine the ASC would make for a good communicator. If Jupiter trine the ASC, the person would be an upbeat and optimistic soul. If Saturn trines the ASC, the person could discipline himself  well. If Uranus trines the ASC, the person may be very intelligent in an out of the box way. People would see this. If Neptune trines the ASC, the person may be very creative and could be known for this. If Pluto trines the ASC, the native can express personal power in his daily life. If Chiron trines the ASC, the person can use his pain in a positive way. I have this. In some cases, the conjunctions and the trines are similar. In others, they are quite different, such as Chiron. Certain conjunctions are not positive and others are.

Lets look at the squares to the ASC. Squares are blocked or thwarted energy. I think the squares are blocked energy and will not change. One needs to work around them. Other people do not agree. However, I think the nature of a square puts the two planets into separate compartments such as in your suitcase. You may have a compartment for shoes and one for your toothbrush. They are separated, obviously. You don’t want your toothbrush near your shoes. That would be dumb. Some things in life are separate. One does not put one’s wallet into the fire. One does not throw one’s dog into the street. Those things are not done because they are wrong. They do not co-exist together to the sane mind. As such, when you see a square, think in terms of polarization and you will have gone a long way toward understanding Astrology.

So, to bring this back to our subject. If the Sun squares the ASC, the native would have a hard time shining. He may feel insecure to be in the spotlight. He may like to be behind the scenes. He may have a hard time with self promotion. This would be the opposite of a salesman placement. If the Moon squared the ASC, the person would feel uncomfortable sharing his heart in his daily life. If Venus is square the ASC, the person may feel blocked in showing love. If Mercury is square the ASC, the person may feel blocked in communicating such that he does not know the right thing to say at the right time. He may feel he fumbles with words. If Mars is square the ASC, the person may feel he is blocked in going after his goals. He may feel that he cannot direct himself to follow his goals. If Jupiter is square the ASC, the person may feel as if he does not have good luck. He may miss the the job offer by a day. He may miss the lucky breaks. If Saturn is square the ASC, the person may not know how to discipline himself. If Uranus is square the ASC, the person may feel like a weirdo but not know how to channel his inner weirdo well. We all have one, for those who don’t realize this 😀  If Pluto square the ASC, the person may not know how to bring his personal power into his daily life. He may not stand up for himself as much as he should or when he should. If Neptune is square the ASC, the person may feel blocked in his creativity. If Chiron is square the ASC, the person may feel he has to hide his pain in a little compartment.

Now to the oppositions. Think see-saw. The oppositions are like a see-saw. One side is up when the other is down. One side is down when the other is up. Think of a bi-polar person, just to make this interesting and practical. I am NOT making fun of bi-polar people, so please don’t start writing me about that. I am trying to make a point on how oppositions work. Think of a person who is joyously happy one day and down in the dumps in a horrible way, another day. Think of how there are almost two, different people in one. This is the nature of the opposition. One day( minute or hour), they may be acting our one planet and the next day, they may be acting out the other. Let’s give an example of Moon/Sun. One day the person may be emotional. The next day, he may logical and into his head, with little emotion. He would not be able to BLEND these two parts of himself well. He would go back and forth with them.  Hence, this mechanism would be the same for oppositions to the ASC.

If the Sun opposes the ASC, the person may be confident, at times, and pull back into a shell, at times. If the Moon opposes the ASC, the person may show his heart and then pull back and be afraid to show his heart. If Mercury opposes the ASC, the person may communicate a lot and then very little. It would swing back and forth. If Venus opposes the ASC, the person may show his love and then be afraid to show his love. This person may be loving one day and cold the next. Whenever you see a yin/yang behavior, in general, think of the oppositions. If Mars opposes the ASC, the person may be assertive one day and passive the next. If Jupiter opposes the ASC, the person may be generous and upbeat one day and pulled into a shell the next. This may, also, be someone who makes big plans and then pulls back. If Saturn opposes the ASC, the person may be disciplined one day and lack discipline the next. If Pluto conjuncts the ASC, the person may show his primal power one day and be afraid to show it the next or second guess what he did. If Neptune opposes the ASC,the person may be lost in dreams, at times. If Chiron opposes the ASC, the person may show his pain and then pull back and feel ashamed. If Uranus opposes the ASC, the person may be weird and out of the box, one day, and doubt  if he made a fool of  himself the next.

I hope that is a good start. Thank you Luke for the request and please put your requests on my Comment Form. They inspire me to write. I have to know that you like it and it means something to you, so I love your suggestions!

Thank you Ami for a very clear & concise article on these aspects to the ASC.I enjoy your style of writing, and as a cardinal, angular G Cross{Sun/Moon/Uranus/Mars}…at the age of 64,i can attest to the squares as still very active and still challenging, but with acquired skills progress is made or i wouldn’t be here today.

Thanks Amiann for this article ! Is there any chance that squares from the Moon, Jupiter, Chiron, Venus, Saturn and Neptune to my Libra AS are not so bad? ….. I am not a lucky girl this time!

        Thank you Amiann! Moon-AS: 5° orb, Chiron-AS: 5° orb Venus-AS: 1° orb, Jupiter-AS: 2° orb, Saturn-AS: 2° orb, Neptune-AS: 2° orb.

Venus is the most problematic one, because it is the closest orb and it rules my Libra AS…. But, I read one of your articles in which you said that Venus square AS makes the person depreciate themselves, although they are quite attractive.

What do you think of all these squares?

        Thank you very much !!
